Artist Munshaw Draws Big Crowd to First Friday!

A big thank you to all who joined us on First Friday, November 3rd, 2023, for a very special Meet & Greet with local illustrator Michael Munshaw! We were very happy to meet Michael, his family, and such a fun group of so many comic fans!

A chance encounter at the “Big Duck Weekend” last August connected us with this very talented artist. After seeing Michael’s work and hearing about his artistic adventures, we asked him if he would be available for a special guest appearance at our gallery.

Munshaw was kind enough to not only accept our invitation, but also brought with him a big box of 11x17” prints which he signed and gave away for free!

Michael is an Illustrator/Graphic Designer who has been in the industry for many years. His artwork is wide ranging, always displaying a dynamic energy to each piece.

As an illustrator he has completed sketch work for Star Wars, Marvel, Rick & Morty, Archer, Dynamite Comics, and more!

This event was held at St. Mary’s County Arts Council, 22660 Washington St, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Congratulations to the St. Mary's County Arts Council 2023 Scholarship Recipients!

The St. Mary’s County Arts Council presented four $1,000 awards to recently graduated high school seniors who are pursuing the arts in higher education. The Arts Council has established these awards to recognize, encourage, and support individuals who demonstrate excellence and a high level of interest in the Performing, Theater, or Visual Arts.

This year’s recipients are Eliza Eschenbrenner, Katelyn Freese, Matthew Hayden, and Lily O’Neill. Congratulations to all!

Eliza Eschenbrenner - Performing Arts Category (Chopticon High School)

Eliza has been involved in Theater Arts since 4th grade. Most recently she took her final bow at Choptipcon HS in the role of Cady Heron in the Mean Girls production. She was a member of the Peace Pipers and Triple Threat Performance troupes and completed classes as part of the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA) program.

Aside from theatre, Eliza states that community service is a big part of her life. She recently served at a youth summer camp on the kitchen crew where she enjoyed helping children ages seven to ten.

“Doing 3+ shows a year, doing community outreach, and staying humble and kind is what is going to push me above and beyond.”

Katelyn Freese - Visual Arts Category (St. Mary’s Ryken High School)

Katelyn has been part of the Visual Arts Scholar program at St. Mary’s Ryken (SMR), allowing her to focus on her artistic development. She served as President of the SMR National Arts Honor Society and has coordinated two in-house exhibits at the St. Mary’s County Arts Council Gallery, featuring the work of the Honor Society students (2022 and 2023). Katelyn worked with her school on a multi-year graphic design project since 10th grade.

“Overall, I hope to be seen and make myself known as someone who is creative, motivated, confident and dependable.”

Matthew Hayden - Performing Arts Category (St. Mary’s Ryken High School )

Matthew began playing the drums around three years old. His first memory of music was listening to Metallica in his Dad’s car at a very young age. His favorite genres of music include metal, rock, country, go-go and jazz. Around the age of 11 he started taking drum lessons from local instructor Sheila Klotz of the SoMar Drummers. At that point, he became more focused on his artistic talents and found that the more he played the more he loved drumming and percussion. Metallica remains one of his favorite bands today.

Matthew has been an active member of the SMR Fine Arts Dept. including the Concert and Jazz bands. He served as President of the Concert Band during his senior year and held the position of Percussion Section Leader.

“I find a lot of beauty and meaning in music.”

Lily O’Neill - Visual Arts Category (Chopticon High School)

Lily was enrolled in the Academy of Visual & Performing Arts (AVPA) program and National Arts Honor Society at Chopticon High School. She recently worked with a team of other students to create collaborative murals featuring themes of diversity. One of her favorite classes at Chopticon High School was AP 3D Studio Art. She also takes ceramic classes at the College of Southern Maryland which she very much enjoys.

Lily, who is a multi-talented artist, joined Chopticon’s Theatre Arts program and served as the Head of Props, with the Crew team, and most recently in the Set Painting department. She created various props and sculptures for productions and is a member of the International Thespian Society.

“Creating art is important to me because it is my passion. It is something that I love doing because I can use it to express my emotions and turn them into something beautiful.”

Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients! Visit our website for information about future scholarship opportunities.

Community Art Project Soars at STEAM Event!

The 2023 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) event at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum drew an amazing group of hosts from community businesses and organizations offering a wide range of fun, hands-on activities. The museum was packed March 11th with attendees of all ages engaging in a wide array of interactive displays and activities.

Now in our third year of joining this special event, the St. Mary’s County Arts Council would like to thank the museum for the opportunity to meet so many people of all ages interested in STEAM concepts.

We would also like to thank everyone who participated in our Community Art Project featuring an airplane in flight. Visitors to our table decorated wooden circles with colorful designs including flowers, hearts, favorite pets, butterflies, a number of Pokémon balls, rainbows, and many other clever creations which were collectively glued to the painting.

Our brand new 3D printer steadily churned a groups of discs which were used for decorating the clouds in the skyline. The goal of our activity was to show attendees how technology and engineering concepts can be integrated and applied to art. We were so amazed at everyone’s creativity! The airplane project will remain on display at the museum for the rest of March and also April 2023.

Be sure to plan to join us next year for the 2024 STEAM event at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum!

Meet the Makers - August 2021

Meet the Makers Barbara Hak 3-page-001.jpg

Welcome to our “Monthly Mini Feature”! We are highlighting different local artisans and crafters who have been busy imagining, creating, dreaming, and doing. Our local artists have been and always will be important facets of our community and valuable contributors to the rich artistic heritage of our county.

Our Maker of the Month for August 2021 is Barbara Hak of Occasionally Round Pottery!

Barbara started creating much of her hand built and wheel thrown pottery pieces following her retirement in 2010 from an extended career at a local hospital. Her husband Larry was worried that she would be “very bored” after switching from a full-time job to full-time retirement, so he encouraged her to explore her interests before the upcoming big transition.

Mrs. Hak had held a longtime curiosity about working with clay but with time constraints due to work obligations her interests were more just thoughts than actual endeavors.

Shortly before retiring, she had enrolled in a few pottery classes and found herself hooked! It was but soon after that she dove in and started experimenting with different designs and glazes and started to create a unique style all of her own.

By 2013, three years into her retirement, Larry had helped to design and transform their home basement into a full studio complete with a potter’s wheel, kiln, and plentiful storage space, a potter’s dream workshop!

Barbara has since created a wide variety of mugs, cups, “Mommy & Grandma Vases”, bowls and platters, plus much more! What started out as simply a joyful hobby evolved into gifts for family and friends, special requests, and for the past few years a growing business given the popularity of “Occasionally Round” handcrafted items.

One of Barbara’s most recent exhibits was at “The Cat’s Meow”, a kitty themed art show and fundraiser in May of 2021 hosted by the St. Mary’s County Arts Council and Feral Cat Rescue of SoMD. Barbara generously donated a large variety of pottery pieces of which all proceeds from sales were given to the rescue group to help purchase food, medicine, and offset medical costs for the kitties.  Pictured below is one of the kittens helped by the pottery sales!
