Art Activities: the River Concert Series at St. Mary's College of Maryland, "Maryland Day" at Historical St. Mary's City, the Potomac Jazz Festival at St. Clement's Island Museum, and St. Mary's Ballet's "The Nutcracker -- A Children's Performance." Concerts, plays, literary festivals, live productions, school programs, student scholarship and artist-recognition awards. Not to mention children's activities, community events, and opportunities for various sectors of the community to come together in support of the arts.
What do all of these programs (and many more) have in common? They're all supported or sponsored by the St. Mary's County Arts Council.
St. Mary's County Arts Council is a non-profit organization striving to increase local awareness of the value of the arts and the ways they enhance the quality of our community and individuals lives. In addition, the Council is working to encourage the development of the arts and artists in St. Mary's County. As a subsidiary of the Maryland State Arts Council, the St. Mary's County Arts Council distributes money to local organizations in support of arts programs that might not otherwise take place: the St. Mary's County Memorial Library's "Summer Children's Programs;" the Chamber Orchestra of Southern Maryland concerts, the Women's Club Performance Series Productions, and the Sanford Concert Series.
