Artist Statement

“Only in our creative acts do we step forth into the light and see ourselves whole and complete.” ~ Carl Jung

While living in The Gambia it was important to integrate myself as much as possible in the culture, to make discoveries, and experience all I could. The relationships I developed while working in the hospital, becoming part of a Gambian family, and taking workshops with local artists helped me become more deeply connected with the people I met there. These connections inspired my photography. I photographed through the emotions I felt, through the beauty I met in people, through the unique light I saw while living there.

I grew up using my father's old Cannon with a broken light meter.  As my high school's yearbook photographer I spent many hours teaching myself how to use the chemicals to create images. I spent my senior year in the darkroom, adjusting the light, "seeing what developed." Since that time, photography has always been my true creative passion.

It is important for me to share these words and images with you, for you to see and feel a little of what I was lucky enough to experience in The Gambia.  Life Without Target is my way to process the contrasts between this life and that.   It is my way to take that feeling of living two different lives into one that is whole and complete.

Thank you for taking the time to see my show,

This Art Gallery is proof of the power of one woman’s hard work!  Candy Cummings had a vision to create an exhibit space in the Lexington Park Library, which would display the artwork of local artists.

The Library Board agreed that this would enhance  the library experience by exposing library customers to the beauty and power of original art.

In 2005, the Lexington Park Library Art Gallery was created and through Candy’s hard work  and dedication her vision became a reality.

In 2014, the St. Mary’s County Arts Council agreed to take over the coordination of the Gallery and Candy donated funds to create an Arts Council Library Gallery Fund which will provide for its ongoing support.

One woman who has truly made a difference  to our library and to our community.
