Artist statement

I have been taking amateur photographs since 1981, when I purchased my first serious SLR camera.  I was an enthusiastic contributor to the Delaware County Camera Club in Delaware County Pennsylvania for about 12 years, where I frequently enjoyed photographic competitions and was quickly forced into the advanced photographic category.  Soon after moving to St. Mary’s County, Maryland, my husband, Jim and I, co-founded the St. Mary’s County Camera Club in 1998 in an effort to promote the art of photography as a hobby.  Watching club members improve and share friendships has been a joy.  We have both won many Camera Club awards and I have been honored as Photographer of the Year and received Advanced Digital Photo of the Year and Grand Champion ribbons at the St. Mary’s County Fair.   I served as the Meetings Chairperson and the President of the club for 2 years apiece, and occasionally lectured for the club.

Jim and I have photographed event, travel, animal and nature photography for many years.  Most recently, we have enjoyed being the Official Volunteer Photographers for the Chesapeake Orchestra (mostly for the River Concert Series).  I have been one of the judges for the St. Mary's County Fair photography competitions several times, and have recently expanded into Pet photography.

My photographic style is generally colorful, with a strong simplified subject and an awareness of line and shape.  I love catching reflections, beautiful light, movement and emotions whenever possible.

Apart from my photography, I began my career as a Travel Consultant in Pennsylvania, before obtaining a Master of Library Science.  I then worked as a Children’s and Reference Librarian in Pennsylvania and St. Mary’s County, where I was frequently asked to photograph library events.  My photos have been on display at the Lexington Park Library Art Gallery, the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, Medstar St. Mary's Hospital and more permanent display at Dr. Matthew Riffee’s and Henry Chiropractic’s offices.  I began work as a professional photographer in 2009 and currently sell photos and photo crafts at Zazzle.com (calmreflectionsphoto), 500pix.com and Chicken Scratch in Park Hall.
I can be reached at calmreflectionsphotography@gmail.com and maintain a web-site, Facebook and a blog all under the name Calm Reflections Photography.

I hope you enjoy our photos.

Show runs July 1 - August 1, 2016

This Art Gallery is proof of the power of one woman’s hard work!

Candy Cummings had a vision to create an exhibit space in the Lexington Park Library, which would display the artwork of local artists.

The Library Board agreed that this would enhance  the library experience by exposing library  customers to the beauty and power of original art.

In 2005, the Lexington Park Library Art Gallery was created and through Candy’s hard work  and dedication her vision became a reality.

In 2014, the St. Mary’s County Arts Council agreed to take over the coordination of the Gallery and Candy donated funds to create an Arts Council Library Gallery Fund which will provide for its ongoing support.

THANK YOU to Candy Cummings!

One woman who has truly made a difference  to our library and to our community.
