On the day of the event please check in at St. Mary’s County Arts Council (22660 Washington St, Leonardtown, MD) or give us a call at 240-309-4061 to let us know that you have arrived.

Where can I paint?

Leonardtown has great architecture with an old town feel. Most of the activity will be centered at Leonardtown Square and the nearby vicinity. You may also paint at the beautiful Leonardtown Wharf Park, Old Jail Museum, Port of Leonardtown Winery, Shepherd’s Old Field Market, Tudor Hall, or anywhere nearby. See link here for the Walking Tour map for points of interest.

How can people find me?

If you set up near or on the town square, people will see you! This is an impromptu event so individual artist locations will not be posted by the event organizers.

When can I set up?

The event is from 5 to 8 PM. Feel free to set up and start painting anytime after 3 PM. Parking is available downtown on the street and at any of the public parking lots.

What are the set up rules?

  • Do not block any business entrances.

  • Do not set up directly on any of the sidewalks as these areas need to be free for wheelchair and stroller access.

  • Please do not paint on private property unless you have permission from the owner.

What about bathrooms and refreshments?

There is a public port-a-potty in town (in the parklet off the square next to New View FiberWorks). As a participant you may also use the restrooms at the Arts Council.

The Arts Council will have bottled water available for plein air artists, just stop by our office! For food and beverages there are a number great restaurants in town within easy walking distance. Many have carry out options.

Can I sell my painting?

Artists may only sell paintings that they are working on or have completed at this event. All transactions are to be directly between the artist and customer.

For artists who are not set up for credit card sales, you may sell your work through the Arts Council for a commission fee of 10%. The Arts Council will automatically add a 6% sales tax. You will be mailed or may pick up at our office a check for the sale (minus commission) within 14 business days. All sale transactions thru the Arts Council must be completed no later than 7:45 PM on September 1st.

Is there a tax write-off to sell Leonardtown paintings in Leonardtown?

Yes! If you sell a painting in an officially designated Arts & Entertainment District of the state of Maryland (which you created in that district) the state offers certain tax benefits. Details available here.
