Biography

Jose Saldana is a globe-trotting, mountain-climbing, photographer of Puerto Rican descent from Philadelphia. Jose experienced almost total loss of hearing by the time he was 2 years old.

In middle school, Jose exhibited a fascination toward the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. He spent hours reading National Geographic Magazines and marveling over the photography of the world’s tallest mountains. The serene peaks and their overwhelming silence appealed to the young man.  It was a fascination that stayed with him.

Jose Saldana was fortunate to attend high school at Washington’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf, part of Gallaudet University. At this point, Jose set his sights on a life of travel, mountain-climbing, and photography.

From 2005 to 2016, Jose climbed more than 40 mountains ranging in heights up to 16,500 feet.  He has reached the peaks of mountains in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alberta, Argentina, New Mexico, Arizona, and Chile from 2005 through 2016.  Camera in icy hands, Jose trekked through the Himalayas in 2014, managing to document the extraordinarily tranquil settings. He had two exhibitions last year, the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and Gallaudet University, Washington, DC.

He captures vast, beautiful silence.

Jose has improved on his photographic techniques by using visual and technical skills gained from his experience filming for Deaf Nation. Jose’s photo collection of his mountain trekking captivate his audience. His breathtaking collection of photos, particularly those of the Himalayas in Nepal, are truly remarkable and have earned Jose national recognition in professional photography circles.

This Art Gallery is proof of the power of one woman’s hard work!  Candy Cummings had a vision to create an exhibit space in the Lexington Park Library, which would display the artwork of local artists.

The Library Board agreed that this would enhance  the library experience by exposing library customers to the beauty and power of original art.

In 2005, the Lexington Park Library Art Gallery was created and through Candy’s hard work  and dedication her vision became a reality.

In 2014, the St. Mary’s County Arts Council agreed to take over the coordination of the Gallery and Candy donated funds to create an Arts Council Library Gallery Fund which will provide for its ongoing support.

One woman who has truly made a difference  to our library and to our community.

If you are interested in displaying your art in the Lexington Park Library Art Gallery, contact Nell Elder at info@smcart.org or 240-309-4061
