Ruth Somerville Collins

Ruth was born and raised in Towson, MD, where as a child it was always understood that she would be an artist, and that was what she wanted to be. As a student at Towson High School, she learned watercolor and oil painting,  printmaking techniques, and commercial applications like lettering, from James D. Iams, an excellent watercolor artist and teacher who not only influenced her but encouraged her to keep at it.
Ruth first came to St. Mary's county while "college shopping", and the beauty of the campus at St. Mary's College was the major deciding factor in attending there as an art major. During her 4 years as a student she was fortunate to have Tom Rowe, Earl Hoffman, and Joe Ross as instructors in various art media. Her main focus was on oil and watercolor painting, painting portraits and taking advantage of the area to provide her with landscape subject matter. She was also aware of the development in this diverse area that was slowly changing the way things looked, and wanted to preserve scenes before they disappeared. After graduation, she started working at a local sign shop where she learned brush lettering and how to make many types of signs. After a year there, she took over running the business. Nine years later she married into the Coast Guard and left the area for Florida, North Carolina, and Baltimore, raising 2 boys along the way. At retirement time from the military, she and her family returned to St. Mary's.
In recent years she has worked in oils, but now she chooses to use acrylics because there is very little time spent waiting for paint to dry, and they can be varnished right away.  Her choice of subject matter is often driven by a desire to record the commonplace, painting in a realist style the things that catch her attention because of the stories they tell. Once something has jumped out at her, often while driving, she attempts to recreate the scene just as she saw it. She also loves photography, so she is rarely without the camera, ready to capture future subject matter.
She is proud to be a member of North End Gallery in Leonardtown, MD. Fine quality giclee prints are available of almost any image on paper or canvas.
More of her work can be seen at North End and at by Ruth S. Collins
