Michelle Ebert Freire
Artist Home County
St. Mary's County
I am a theatre and drama educator and practitioner who has been active in the field as an adult for 30 years. In 2017, I established Pretend Power, which offers drama classes to youth ages 3-14. Pretend Power has provided drama workshops in studio settings, through St. Mary's Department of Recreation and Parks, in St. Mary's County Public Schools, and with the Catholic Homeschool Cooperative of St. Mary's County. I am also an adjunct instructor at the College of Southern Maryland; before that, I was a full-time, tenured professor in the Theatre Arts Department at California State University, San Bernardino. I have worked in the education departments of many regional theatres and arts organizations.
I enjoy directing local, college, and youth theatrical productions.
Areas of particular interest to me are facilitating students in the devising of original performance pieces, and using drama therapy and Playback Theatre techniques (in a non-intentionally therapeutic manner) as a way to safely explore social and cultural issues.
All grade Levels
These drama-based residencies are tailored to meet the unique needs of each school and student group. Teachers can opt for the Artistic Technique Path (direct instruction in acting, creative drama, and/or playwriting), or the Arts Integration Path (theatre/drama as a means to deeply examine a piece of literature, curricular topic, or social/character education area). Each session incorporates theatre games, character exploration, and reflective elements). Depending on the length and focus of the residency, teachers may opt to work toward a "Sharing Presentation."
