About the Artist
Gerry Wood has had a lifelong interest in art and was associated with painting as a child since her mother was an artist. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she attended Oklahoma State University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. It was not until later in her married life, when the children were older, that she took up art. Gerry studied art in private classes, art workshops, and adult education/community college classes—among the instructors—Frank Webb, Gary Akers, Skip Lawrence, Joe Mayer, Martha Hudson, Don Stone, Tony Couch, Olivia Trejo, Linda Griffin, Pat Dews & Judi Betts.
Gerry primarily paints in watercolors but does enjoy acrylics & collage, and her favorite subjects are landscapes, florals, lighthouses, barns, “fantasy fish”, Sotterley Plantation, Poppies, Daffodils, Daylilies, Zinnias and Sunflowers. Gerry’s workspace may strike you as a place where learning and growing as an artist are as much a priority as the painting process…her studio/gallery clearly does double duty as an active classroom, with 7 paint-speckled tables arranged around a work-in-progress. Gerry is constantly striving to create new and exciting paintings and to attend art workshops to learn more techniques to teach to her art students.
Gerry continues to be active in art organizations and is a signature member of the prestigious Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), Calvert Artists’ Guild, and Artworks@7th Gallery in North Beach. Gerry has exhibited her work in shows and bazaars in the region, formerly the Unique Boutique Show, Annmarie Garden Artsfest, Calvert Artists’ Guild Shows, and was also featured on the cover of the St. Mary’s County Guide 1997-1998 (published by the Rotary Club). She has taught classes with Adult Education, Parks & Recreation, Commission on Aging, Pax River NAS, Charles County Community College (now CSM), and gives private classes in the spring and fall. She has entered juried shows winning many ribbons and awards. She has had artwork in office locations such as doctors, lawyers, dentists, county government, physical therapy offices, Wildewood Village, as well as ARC of So. Md., Furniture Gallery of Prince Frederick, Avondale Bldg. and H&R Block office.
